Tokhang- The Philippine Drug War

Tokhang is a word in the Philippine Bisaya meaning “to approach and talk”. It also has become synonymous with the Duterte administration’s deadly war against drugs. Photographer Olof Jarlbro takes us inside the drug war to the grim murder scenes around metro Manila. But Jarlbro’s photography doesn’t end there : instead, in search of answers, he meets up with the relatives of those loved ones that have been brutally killed.

Refuge: takes us to the war in Syria and to the safe boarders of Europe, in the Bulgarian refugee camps. Despite the absence of war, the conditions in the camps are harsh and the future for the refugees seems not as bright as they have imagined it before crossing the borders of Europe. Bulgaria was not by any means ready to handle hundreds of refugees, certainly not many thousands. Jarlbro’s photographs depict the life in the camps, his sincere and straight-forward approach to people gets him inside the refugees’ small quarters they call home. In Jarlbro’s fifth book he documents every aspect of being in a refuge premises and being a refugee in Europe, photographing people’s sorrow and searching for glimmers of hope in their grim situation.

Nepal and Mao takes us to a country in which peace was declared many years ago. But somehow there is still tension in the country. Old royalist that won’t step down from army posts, constant strikes and protests in the capital. Some regions with ethnic majorities have started to question the Maoist and Nepal’s control and to strive after their own state and independence. In Jarlbro’s third book about Nepal, he travels across the country in buses and off-road vehicles meeting Maoists at their camps in the jungle and up in mountain, following the tensions throughout the country, visiting communist rally and riots. Underneath the chaos and political standpoint, Jarlbro photographs do not reveal the soldier but the person behind the uniform.
